Spelling
A resource for practicing spelling is Spelling City, a free website that allows you to enter your list of words to practice and take quizzes, play games. This can be especially helpful for some of the bonus words that aren't practiced in the spelling unit package. We will begin our first spelling unit on the week of Sept. 11th, with a quiz on Friday.
Our class will be using the structure of the Daily 5 to organize our language lessons and practice this term. Once students are settled into the expected behaviours for independent work, it will enable me to engage students in one-on-one conferences and meet with small groups to support specific learning needs. CAFE lessons will also be part of our class language development.
READING
We will shortly begin exploring the Reading Power strategy of forming Connections. Students will progress to independently applying taught lessons with a wide selection of picture books at a just-right reading level. We will apply these skills throughout the year, including with cooperative novel studies and literature circles.
WRITING
Students are creating wonderful journal covers and will begin Daily 5 strategies for recording personal stories from the 'memory pocket' of writing and adventure stories that use the 'imagination pocket'. Over the next several weeks we will be using Writing Power strategies to organize ideas, edit and polish writing pieces that focus on making Connections.
